Structured Uses of Research Data

Research data needs to be treaded in a structured, transparent and professional way in order to enable the possibility to exchange and re-use such data. Within the Leibniz Research Alliance “Crises in a Globalised World” GESIS invests into the needed infrastructure that allows the provision, archiving and re-use of research data produced by the projects of the Alliance. Therefore, already existing research data and research data in preparation needs to be recorded. In addition guidelines for archiving research data need to be developed and implemented within the Alliance. This is done during the first project phase.

The registration of research data collections requires the setup of a corresponding verification portal. Assisted by the project coordination, GESIS will create a concept for such a verification portal that will be hosted on the project web appearance. This portal will allow researchers to register research data generate or re-used by themselves as well as to identify relevant repositories to publish research data.

Generating archive-able research data for re-use has to rely on set of premises, e.g. data security. To prepare the researchers within the Leibniz Research Alliance “Crises in a Globalised World” with the needed knowledge, GESIS will provide training in research data management, planned at the end of 2017. Besides a general training, specific issues can come up with every single project. In addition researcher may not be familiar with preparing archive-able research data or may not have enough experience in this topic. GESIS, with his profound expertise, can profit customized solutions for single projects and ensure research data that can easily be re-used by other researchers because it was created in line with current best practice standards. Those topics will be covered in the second project phase.
